Father Dimitri Tsakas

Father Dimitri Tsakas was born and raised in Australia. Ordained by His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos to the Diaconate on 12 May 1991 and to the Priesthood on 23 July 1994, he currently serves as Proistamenos at the Parish-Community of Saint George in Brisbane.   Father Dimitri represented His Eminence in the capacity of Archepiscopal Vicar for the 4th Archdiocesan District of Queensland and Papua New Guinea of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, from 2000 to 2019.    In August 2019, His Eminence Archbishop Markarios of Australia elevated Fr Dimitri to the rank of Proto-Presbyter.

 

In 1987 Fr Dimitri completed a Bachelor of Social Work with Honours. For several years he worked with disadvantaged groups before specialising in Psychotherapy with professional experience in Psychiatric Mental Health and the Family Court of Australia.

 

In 1997 he graduated from St Andrew’s Theological College with Bachelor of Theology.  In 2007 he graduated with a Master’s Degree of International Relations from Sydney’s Macquarie University. His research focused upon Turkish and European Union relations.   At present he is a PhD candidate researching the diplomacy of Pope Francis in global affairs.

 

Father Dimitri has in the past served as a member of the Archdiocesan Council of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, on the Board of Governors of the Archdiocese’s Youth Retreat and Recreation Centre in Queensland, and as Board Member of Greek Orthodox Community Care (GOCCARE) in Brisbane.

 

He has also served as a member of the State Minister’s Cultural Diversity Roundtable, and as part of the Queensland Police Ethnic Advisory Group. Father Dimitri is a founding organiser of the Queensland Police Commissioner’s Annual Multi-faith Dinner and remains keenly involved in several Inter-Cultural dialogues and initiatives. For community service, the Queensland State Government awarded him a Queensland Flood Hero award in 2011.

 

Father Dimitri is married to Presvitera Michelle and has two sons. He enjoys a love for International Relations, Philosophy, History, and Inter-Cultural Dialogue. He has travelled extensively through Asia, Europe, Canada, and Australia.

Cultural Committee

The Cultural Committee of the Greek Orthodox Community of St George was established in 1974 under the chairmanship of the Late Alex Freeleagus, Consul General for Greece in Queensland. The cultural committee successfully staged three Greek Expos (Ekthesis) in 1976, 1978 and 1981.
