Rev Fr Stavros Karvelas
Father Stavros Karvelas was born and raised in Australia. He was ordained to the Diaconate in 2000 by His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos of blessed memory and then to the Priesthood in 2001. He currently serves as Efimerios at the Parish-Community of St George in South Brisbane.
In 1996 Fr Stavros completed a Bachelor of Civil Engineering Degree with the University of Technology in Sydney and worked in Local Government Civil Works in Sydney for several years. He was also actively involved in the Orthodox Youth Fellowship Movement in Sydney, serving as a youth leader in the Greek Orthodox Communities of both Kogarah and Rosebay.
In 2000 Fr Stavros graduated from St Andrews Theological College with a Bachelor of Theology. He has served in various Parishes and Communities in Sydney including Rosebay, Blacktown and Thornleigh. At Thornleigh, he was the founding priest and helped establish the newly formed Parish of St Therapon where he served as Proestamenos for twelve years.
From 2001 to 2006 he was the representative of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia on the NSW Ecumenical Council where he helped pioneer the Pilgrimage of Resurrection Movement – a journey through the Holy Week and Easter traditions of several Christian Churches. From 2001 to 2012 he served as chaplain at Macquarie University and from 2013 to 2018 he served as a prison chaplain with NSW Corrective Services, ministering to he pastoral needs of inmates of Greek Orthodox Faith across NSW.
Fr Stavros is married to Presbytera Stella and they have two sons. He has an active interest in current affairs, politics, church history and theology. He also enjoys the great outdoors.
