Welcome to Community Development
The Community Development initiative was established in 2019 to facilitate a support community participation and engagement for people of all ages and life stages. It is underpinned by principles of Social Justice including: Access, Equity, and Inclusion.
The Community Development Officer (C.D.O) is responsible for creating and facilitating a variety of programs, events and services designed according to community interests and needs and incorporating research and analysis. These include special events, regular programs and activities, welfare support and church ministry programs.
The Programs and activities currently being offered are listed below. The link to each program will take you to further information and offer you ways to engage more fully in community happenings.

PLAYGROUPS 0-5 YEARS
PAREA Playgroup : A collaboration between G.O.C and the Cypriot Association. This is an early childhood developmental program for children 0-5 years. Meets every Wednesday 9.30-11.30am at 3 Vulture St West End. Cost: Free for members of GOC or Cypriot Association $10 for non-members.
G.O.C of St George, Brisbane Playgroup: An informal get-together for families with young children, to play, chat and make new friends. Held at Greek school building every Tuesday (school terms) 9.30-11.00am Cost: Free.
CHURCH MINISTRY YOUNG LIFE PROGRAMS
The Joy Team: A spiritual Formation program for children 3-7 years and their families facilitated by qualified Catechist Leaders. Meets first Sat of every month at the Respite Centre from 5.00-6.15pm. Cost: Donation.
Saturday & Sunday Church School: Support for Saturday and Sunday School teachers as well as R.E teachers. Information and resources for parents in raising Orthodox children. Cost: Free
YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULT INITIATIVES
Youth : Creating platforms to engage youth and give them a voice: Youth Forums, State Youth Conference, Volunteering as well as individual support and referrals.
Young Adults: Community Social Group : A social inclusion friendship group for young (and older) adults. Meets once a month (days vary) offering different activities and outings, based on the interest of members. Cost: Depends
PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT AND ENRICHMENT
Themed Events: Available throughout the year based on different topics of interest and need. Usually held at Greek Club or Respite Centre. Cost: Depends
Topics include:
- Women Living Their Passion
- Mental Health and Wellbeing
- Greek Cooking Classes
Support and Referrals: Providing individual and family social/welfare support, information and referrals for all ages, abilities, and life stages. Cost: Free
Volunteering Program: Opportunities to utilize skills, gifts, and talents to support GOC community programs as well as get involved in start-up programs and services. Volunteering abroad post-COVID will also eb available. Cost: Blue Card
