1821-2021 – Anniversary of the War of Independence of Greece – LECTURE SERIES

March 24, 2021 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

The Greek Orthodox Community of St George Brisbane is hosting a number of events to mark the 200yr anniversary of the War of Independence of Greece and the creation of the Modern Greek State.

The first is a presentation by Professor Alastair Blanshard, who is currently the Paul Eliadis Professor of Classics and Ancient History at the University of Queensland.

His presentation is titled:

“Why the Greek Revolution Matters to the World”

The Greek Revolution between 1821 and 1830 is one of the most significant events in the history of Modern Greece.  Yet it is more than just an event in the life of a single nation state.  It’s impact was felt far and wide and the events of the Revolution would continue to resonate throughout Europe and America for decades.  In this lecture, Professor Blanshard will examine the wider impact of the Greek Revolution and its contribution to cultural and intellectual life.

Alastair Blanshard was born in Brisbane, studied at the University of Queensland and the University of Cambridge.  His presentations are always entertaining and enlightening.  This will be no different.

In addition, there will be a presentation by the Hellenic Dancers to mark this special occasion.

Admission is free and more details are set out in the attached flyer
