Hellenic Dancers

History of the Hellenic Dancers, Brisbane

1977 saw the formation of Brisbane’s “Hellenic Dancers”. Since then the group has spent over 30 years promoting and preserving Greek Culture predominately through traditional dance. As ambassadors of the Greek Orthodox Community of St George, The Hellenic Dancers are Brisbane’s leading professional Traditional Greek Dancing Group driven by a group of dedicated young volunteers showcasing their Culture all over Australia.

Over the past 30 years The Hellenic Dancers have had the privilege of appearing in some very memorable and unforgettable performances. Milestone performances for The Hellenic Dancers include the Commonwealth Games (1982), Expo ’88 and the Lighting of the Torch Ceremony for the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Through performances and fundraising The Hellenic Dancers have been able to purchase and further grow their large collection of traditional costumes over the years.

Performances

With traditional routines from many regions of Greece or a modern performance of high energy dances, The Hellenic Dancers take bookings for any type of function including weddings, corporate functions, Christmas parties and community events. Academy Classes

Classes are run through out the year in conjunction with the Greek Ethnic School of Saint George for young children from Grades 1-9. These classes are a introduction to the basic elements of Greek dancing. Your Child does not need to be a student of the Greek Ethnic School to participate in these lessons. For more information about this dancing lessons, please call the Greek Orthodox Community of Saint George Administration office on (07) 3249 1000.

Recruitment

Auditions for recruitment of new dancers occur in the first few weeks of February and June every year. All interested dancers must be 14 years of age at the time of recruitment.

Father Dimitri Tsakas

Father Dimitri Tsakas was born and raised in Australia. Ordained by His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos to the Diaconate in 1991 and to the Priesthood in 1994, he currently serves as Proistamenos at the Parish-Community of Saint George in Brisbane. He represented His Eminence in the capacity of Archepiscopal Vicar for the 4th Archdiocesan District of Queensland and Papua New Guinea of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia from 2000-2019.

Cultural Committee

The Cultural Committee of the Greek Orthodox Community of St George was established in 1974 under the chairmanship of the Late Alex Freeleagus, Consul General for Greece in Queensland. The cultural committee successfully staged three Greek Expos (Ekthesis) in 1976, 1978 and 1981.
