The Story of Paniyiri

The Paniyiri Greek Festival is Queensland’s signature celebration of all things Greek and the largest two day ethnic festival in Australia.

The famous annual odyssey, when Brisbane experiences Hellenic hospitality at its best over one week in May, is based at Musgrave Park, The Greek Orthodox Community of Saint George, South Brisbane and The Greek Club.

Paniyiri is a community initiative of the 35,000 strong Greek community of South East Queensland but is joined by the general community in a celebration of fun, food and friendship.  The festival is a testament to Greece, proving that it really is a destination where tradition holds firm and where hospitality and living life to the fullest is everything.

Mission Statement

To stage Brisbane’s largest and most colourful cultural experience, showcasing the Greek community’s social, religious and cultural heritage in a celebration involving all Australians and in doing so, raise funds for an array of Greek Orthodox Community Welfare organisations and causes.

Funds raised by the Paniyiri Greek Festival are channeled back into the community via the Greek Orthodox Community of St George-Brisbane, Brisbane’s oldest Greek Orthodox Community, established in Queensland in the 1920s. The Community has grown considerably since then and now provides many vital and beneficial services, not only to its members but to the wider community of Brisbane.

Services that benefit from funds donated by Paniyiri include the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint George, Greek Ethnic School of Saint George, GOC Care, Aged & Community Care, Welfare, Childcare, Saint Nicholas Nursing Home and many more.
